The short verdict
Of the Ooni ovens I used, the Koda 12 offered the easiest portability but the least working room around a pizza.
How I tested it
I used the Koda 12 as a compact gas oven and compared the things that matter once the novelty wears off: carrying it, finding space for it, launching a pizza and turning close to the rear flame.
My surviving notes support those practical conclusions, but they do not include a controlled heat-up test, measured stone temperatures or a retained pizza count. I have kept those gaps visible rather than turning Ooni's claimed figures into my own results.
Everyday use
At 9.2kg, the Koda 12 was the most portable Koda I used. Its compact body made it easier to bring out for a pizza night and put away afterwards than the larger gas models.
That convenience is the main reason I would choose it. The trade-off appears as soon as a pizza is inside: there is very little spare floor around a 12-inch pizza, peel placement matters and every turn feels tighter.
Cooking performance
The rear burner can make the back of the oven much hotter than the front. I treated the 500°C maximum as a ceiling, not a cooking instruction, and watched the pizza rather than assuming the floor was evenly heated.
This is simple gas cooking, but it is not hands-off cooking. I had to launch carefully, turn early and keep moving the hottest edge away from the flame.
If wood or charcoal matters more than gas simplicity, read the Ooni Karu 12 review.
Capacity
The stated limit is 12 inches. I found that size useful for individual pizzas, but the lack of spare room was more important than the headline diameter.
If I wanted larger pizzas or an easier turning motion, I would move up to the Koda 16 or Koda 2. The Koda 12 makes most sense when easy storage matters more than working room.
If a 12-inch cooking floor sounds restrictive, the Ooni Koda 16 review explains what the larger oven adds.
Ownership
The propane gas setup removed fire management from the routine. I could concentrate on dough, topping and turning rather than building and maintaining a solid-fuel fire.
There is no built-in stone-temperature reading, so I would still keep an infrared thermometer beside it. That is a small extra step, but an important one in an oven with such a pronounced heat gradient.
Who should buy it?
At the £299 UK list price I paid, the Koda 12 makes a strong case as a simple, portable gas oven. I would buy it for one or two people and limited storage.
I would skip it if I wanted large pizzas, generous peel clearance or a calmer turning rhythm. The Koda 16 gives up some portability but is much easier to work inside.

Pizza Preacher verdict
The Koda 12 is the easiest Koda to carry and store, and £299 is fair for such a straightforward gas oven. Its cramped floor and fierce rear heat keep it from scoring higher.
Buy it if portability and simple gas cooking matter most. Skip it if you want generous turning room.
The overall score is the mean of the five decision factors above. Score basis: First-hand portability, working-room and heat-distribution observations, scored against a £299 UK list price checked on 5 September 2026.
